Season’s greetings to you Slatts and welcome for the first time to Sentinel Daily… thanks for being part of our end-of-year roundup! Question one – What was the best new album you heard in 2016? “King – Reclaim the Darkness”.
Yep, definitely a solid album that one… what about old stuff – did any reissues grab your attention this year? “No re-issues but I could listen to Deicide‘s Once Upon the Cross till I shat”.
An answer which conjures perhaps the most disturbing mental image of any I’ve experienced thus far in 2016. Thank you. Moving swiftly onwards, what was your non-musical highlight of the last twelve months? “Becoming a father… of the massive shit I did from listening to Deicide’s Once Upon the Cross”.
… And I was on the edge of my seat about to congratulate you! But props for neatly linking the two answers anyway! Next question: What have you found particularly disappointing about the wider world in 2016? “Same as it ever was”…
Ain’t that the truth. Here’s something to perhaps provoke a more positive response… Do you think the music scene – and our sort of music in particular – is in good shape at the minute? “Absolutely. King, Psycroptic, Disentomb, Ruins, Desecrator, Clowns, Horsehunter, Batpiss – the list goes on of people touring the world or creating rad music”.
A great list indeed. Not wanting to piss on your chips after that uplifting response, but did anything disappoint you musically in 2016? “My shit breaks all the time. It’s disappointing”.
Which practitioners of your own musical role impressed you most this year? “James Ahearn from Clowns – Dude is sick”.
And what about bands – what were some of the best live acts you saw this year? “Hordes of the Black Cross at Northcote Social Club, Spotting at a squat in Footscray, Mesa Cosa at Yah Yahs, Spermaids on the roof of a shop in Collingwood”.
Another nice list! Back to you and King Parrot now – What does the next twelve months hold in prospect for you? “Tour the world, get lit, record an album, play Unify Festival, do the Thrash, Blast, Grind Tour in February around Australia with Revocation and other rad bands to be announced”.
Exciting times ahead then! Which band, if any, do you think is primed to break out into the wider consciousness in 2017? “Whoever works hard and continuously tours and beats people around the head with their music. For my money its Spotting“.
We’ll keep an eye on them. We’re fast approaching the festive season – best night for a party – Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve? “Neither – I prefer a Monday night in April. If you send invites on New Years Eve and engage a publicist, and an event manager and make sure they follow up on RSVPs and probably have something cool at the party like streamers – people will probably come. Probably”.
Glad to hear I’m not the only man who’s happy with the concept of ‘party on a Monday’. It’s alwaus been a great, wanker-free night to get on the piss… But in view of your answer we’re not now going to ask for a New Year’s Resolution – but what musical feat do you hope to attain next year? “A whole year where my shit doesn’t break”.
You can but hope. Finally, anything else you’d like to say to the readers of Sentinel Daily? “Drive fast. Take Risks”.
