German street rockers Dust & Bones have been extant for some while now, although they haven’t really managed to translate their dirty rock n’roll thrills to an international audience yet. Will that change with Mission Back To The Forbidden Planet? It’s hard to say, though there’s certainly music here that’ll appeal to fans of the likes of well, anything from Turbonegro to The Almighty, frankly…

Yep, this album is a real mishmash; the band has two distinctly different vocalists, which adds to the fun, and stylistically they never stay in one spot long enough to allow themselves to be pigeonholed. This makes reviewing them pretty difficult – another reason that they been a well-kept secret up til now, I’d wager – although you get the sense that almost all the material here might be best savoured with a beer in hand in the company of four or five hundred close friends.

Still, we’re here because we’re here and a review is what I’ve been charged to undertake so here we go. At their best, on raging pop rockers like For All The Good And The Bad they make a righteous row propelled by the always convincing drums of Jarle and the wall of sound created by the guitars of Dick and Bernd; Imagine, if you can, Rocket From The Crypt, Die Toten Hosen and Three Colours Red getting together for three minutes of fun n’frolics and you are getting close to having an idea of where these bokes operate.

But that’s just one track out of a dozen, and if you don’t think it sounds like something you’d be interested in getting down with then never fear because you’re sure to find something elsewhere on the record if loud guitars and singalong vocals are the only boxes you need to tick for a good time. Even Elvis – or at least an Elvis impersonator – gets a look in, on the bouncy UR R’N’R, and if that’s not good enough for you then I’m sorry but I can’t be of any more assistance…

Mission Back To The Forbidden Planet releases on January 26th.
