Carrying on the good work laid down by last year’s career-best The Opaque and The Divine album, American metallers Kill Ritual are back with a short-but-very-sweet EP in the shape of Thy Will Be Done.

The band used to refer to themselves as thrashers, but in 2021 that tag is a little limiting for the band, who continue to head towards the stratosphere since the arrival of vocalist Brian ‘Chalice’ Betterton; sure, they still know their way around a good ol’ Megadeth-approved chug every now and then, Seamus Gleason‘s calf muscles still get to make like a well-oiled set of pistons when circumstances demand, but there’s a whole lot more to the band’s attack on tracks like Obey The Ritual, which is easily the most impressive thing I’ve ever heard come out of Camp KR!

The band now come on in that great tradition of America prog/power metal that goes back to names like Crimson Glory and Sanctuary, or maybe even latter day Metal Church or Vicious Rumors; that’s good company to keep, for sure, but Kill Ritual prove time and again on this little EP that they are up to the task… It’s not all down to Betterton, though he’s undoubtedly the spark that has ignited the Kill Ritual flame. Guitarist Steve Rice continues to impress with his playing, but somehow the band (completed by bassist David Alusik) have just clicked over the last couple of years in every respect. The beautiful way drummer Gleason switches up the rhythm midway through closing track The Opaque is Divine is draw dropping – as is the way that the rest of the band go with him without batting a collective eyelid. That’s major league stuff, right there…

Hopefully this EP is just a collection of odds and ends to tidy up the The Opaque and The Divine era, and another full-length album is on the cards very soon – because at the rate this band is developing, the next release from them is going to be way too exciting to miss…

Thy Will Be Done Releases on October 29th.
